Herbal Infusion Recipes

Herbal Infusions:

Infusions can be done by solar energy (sunny location) or stove top method (simmering herbs).  I prefer the solar method, because it looks nice in the windowsills and does not take much effort.

Rosemary and Mint Solar Infusion

Ingredients

  • 2 pinches Fresh Rosemary Sprigs (Washed and Dryed - No Moisture for Infusion)
  • 3-4 pinches Fresh Mint, Lemon Balm, Spearmint, Peppermint (You choice of mints, use whatever you have or like)
  • 1 glass Clear Glass Bottle or Jar (Clear decorative bottles look wonderful in the windowsill)
  • Grape Seed Oil or Olive Oil (Both oils have great taste and skin benefits)

Directions

Step 1 Pick a few springs from your Rosemary and Mint herbs. Fresh herbs are best to use in solar infusions.
Step 2 Rinse of herbs and dry completely on a paper towel. Any moisture will contaminate your infusion
Step 3 Slightly bruise the herbs between your fingers. (make sure your hands are clean and free of chemicals) Insert dried herbs into the clear glass container of your choice
Step 4 Cover the herbs completely with the oil of your choice, fill container almost to the top
Step 5 Tap the glass container slightly on the countertop or table to remove any air bubbles
Step 6 Cork or cap tightly and let sit in a sunny location for 2-3 weeks.
Step 7 Shake mixture once a day. Every week, uncap and smell. Mixture should be pleasant. If the odor is offensive or rancid, your infusion has been contaminated and you must begin again.
Step 8 After the 2-3 weeks of solar infusion, strain the herbs through a tight woven sieve or cheesecloth into another decorative glass bottle or other glass container.
At this point you can add a fresh set of the same herbs for a decorative touch and stronger flavor, but this is not required.
Step 9 Cap or cork tightly. Enjoy! These infusions with Rosemary and oil are great for culinary uses as well as skin softeners.
